Our Victim and Witness Assistance Program is a free service for University of South
Carolina students, faculty and staff that specializes in assisting crime victims through
an incident and supports them as they navigate the criminal justice system.
These civil orders are granted by courts and provide protection from an abusive current or former spouse, someone you have a child in common with, or a current or previous live-in partner of the opposite sex.
A Restraining Order is issued by a court and mandates that a perpetrator who has been harming, threatening or stalking and harassing a victim to refrain from contacting them in any way and maintain distance from them. If the perpetrator violates the order, they risk being arrested.
An Order of Protection is a civil order granted by family court that can protect you from an abuser who is a spouse, former spouse, someone with whom you share a child, or someone of the opposite sex you have lived with.
