One Department, Two Distinct Disciplines
We are one department, but our theatre and dance students are able to immerse themselves
in their individual programs of study through performance spaces and opportunities
not just for actors and dancers, but also for our scenic, costume, and lighting designers,
aspiring teachers, and directors and choreographers. At USC, you can learn almost
anything about the world of theatre and dance performance.
The theatre and dance programs boast talented faculty , as well as visiting guest artists and alumni working professionally in all facets
of the theatre and dance arts.
Our Mission
The faculty, staff and students within the University of South Carolina Department
of Theatre and Dance are dedicated to excellence and innovation in education, service
and artistic achievement in collaborative, supportive, diverse, and inclusive environments.
With areas of study focused on acting, directing, design, stagecraft, teaching, and
research, our theatre program offers undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity
to learn, to practice, and to chart their own course.
Named one of the top three collegiate programs to consider for classical ballet by
Dance Magazine , the Betsy Blackmon Dance Program offers a solid curriculum in ballet and contemporary
dance. Our Dance Major offers concentrations in either Performance and Choreography
or Dance Education, with K-12 Certification.
On Stage
Our students don't just learn -- they do . Our theatre and dance programs stage numerous productions every year in one of our
many performance spaces, and with those come countless opportunities to perform, direct,
choreograph, design or work back stage. Our performances are open to our entire university
family, as well as to our community and state. Subscriptions are available for our
current dance and theatre seasons.
